Tree Charter branch

"The Charter for Trees, Woods and People sets out the principles for a society in which people and trees can stand stronger together. The Tree Charter was launched in Lincoln Castle on 6 November 2017; the 800th anniversary of the 1217 Charter of the Forest. The Tree Charter is rooted in more than 60,000 ‘tree stories’ gathered from people of all backgrounds across the UK".

The Charter upholds the following 10 principles

  1. Sustain landscapes rich in wildlife.
  2. Plant for the future.
  3. Celebrate the power of trees to inspire.
  4. Recover health, hope and wellbeing with the help of trees.
  5. Protect irreplaceble woods and trees.
  6. Grow forests of community and innovation.
  7. Plan greener local landscapes.
  8. Strengthen our landscape with trees.
  9. Make trees accessible to all.
  10. Combat the threats to our habitats.

Do you have a favourite tree?
We welcome you to share a photo and a story about why you love this tree so much.

With so much developement for new housing and the like it is vital that we look out for our local trees and try and preserve them. In and around Totnes there are many particularly beautiful and old trees and we have noticed that their location is missing from the Ancient Tree Inventory
You can play a part in recording these veterans which are home to so many species and provide essential fresh air, clean water and beauty in our lives. There is an easy guide showing you how to record and identify each tree on their website.

This huge Black Poplar is hidden away in the willow wetlands near the archimedies screw turbines, just off the Totnes to Dartington riverside path.
It's nearly 6m in diameter. Do go and say hello if you are passing.
